Most crawl space moisture comes up out of the ground.

An exposed dirt floor gives off moisture continuously. With nothing between the soil and the air, that moisture loads the crawl space, condenses on cool framing and ductwork, and feeds growth on the wood above it.

Vented crawl spaces can make it worse in summer, not better. Warm, humid outside air drawn through the vents meets surfaces that are cooler than the dew point, and the vents that were supposed to dry the space end up wetting it.

Because air moves upward through a house, what is in the crawl space does not stay there. Fiberglass insulation hanging down between joists is often the first visible sign, and ductwork running through the space can distribute what is present into the rooms above.
